Introduction
Greetings! My name is Michael Grether, and I a History Teacher at Rolesville High School. I am also the Cross Country and Track & Field Coach. I love people. The reason I went into teaching was to be in a job that is "with people, about people and for people." I am also extremely passionate about what I teach because I looooooove history.
Mission Statement
My mission is to educate the whole child. Each day, I will provide a safe environment for my students to grow, both in their successes and failures. I will be a positive role model, treating each student with respect, seeking to understand before seeking to be understood. I will hold them to high expectations while teaching the tools and skills necessary to achieve them. My mission is to open their minds eye, giving them a new perspective on the world around them.
Academic History
I was born in Tulsa, OK. I have spent time in Michigan, Canada, and various parts of Ohio before moving to Raleigh in 2007. I am the youngest of six children, having 4 brothers and a sister (she rules the roost). I graduated with honors from North Royalton High School (in the suburbs west of Cleveland, Oh). While in high school I was a varsity athlete in cross country, wrestling and track. I also participated in show choir, theater, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
I then went to Ohio University (Go Bobcats!) and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Education, and a double minor in History and Political Science. While in college, I was a swing dance instructor, which is how I met the love of my life, Jaimi (who is a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse, as well as an aspiring violinist). We were wed July 09, 2005. In the summer of 2006, I started a web design company called Obsidian Design, with a friend from college. In January, 2007 we moved to Raleigh, NC. In August, 2008 I completed my Masters of Science in Education from Walden University in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, carrying a 4.0 GPA.
In November, 2010 I got the best job title ever: Daddy. I now have four wonderful children: Lillian Grace, Elizabeth Rose, and Weston Michael, and Victoria Violet. Much time and energy invested in singing, dancing, feeding, diapers, napping, and doing voice overs for stuffed animals.
Hobbies/Interests
My other hobbies include reading, listening to music, cooking, traveling, running/working out and playing with my children. I am an obsessed fan of the Michigan Wolverines; with football being my viewing sport of choice.
I am a USA Track and Field Certified Coach, and I am looking to further my knowledge and experience in these areas, as I find the sport being quite enjoyable.I coached the Leesville Road Middle school Boys and Girls Track teams for three seasons. We won two championships and we broke 8 of the 10 school records for each team. I coached the Leesville Road High School Track Coach for two season, where I focused on sprinters and high jumpers (having 4 jumpers place top 8 in the state). I now coach the Rolesville Rams Cross Country and Track programs to a combined four conference championships.
I have gotten a taste of traveling overseas, and it has left me yearning for more. I have started a group to do yearly student travel with EF Tours to Paris, London, Rome and Barcelona.
My favorite movies are Shawshank Redemption, the Matrix (first one) and the Lord of the Rings Series. I also enjoy most everything from Pixar.
As for music, I listen to practically everything (as my students experience in my World History class). But, I refuse to listen to music with inappropriate and vulgar lyrics, no matter what the style.
I am tech junkie, loving most everything Apple.
I love coffee. When looking for a local fix, I greatly enjoy the Coffee Lodge. My favorite "chain" coffee shop is Caribou Coffee (or their sister company Peets) as they make the best dark roast coffees on this side of the Atlantic Ocean; namely "Obsidian" and "Mahogany"... mostly enjoyed via K-Cups.
Future Plans
Having finished my Masters in Education, I would like to turn my attention to either a Master's in History through American Public University in European History with an additional Master's Certificate in Ancient Classical History or a Degree in Exercise Physiology. A PhD and a college professorship maybe down that road as well.... I would like to do some more traveling of the European continent and to get over to Asia... But for right now, I am enjoying being a Dad, husband, teacher, traveler and coach.
